Damaraland is one of the most fascinating places in Namibia, while it might not have the wildlife density of Etosha it does have the iconic desert Elephant and Black Rhino and a whole lot of wilderness! The southern part of the region is best known for the Twyfelfontein rock engravings, the Brandberg mountain and their ‘White Lady” cave painting, the north has a higher concentration of the rarer large game due to having more vegetation.
This area is home to some of our favourite properties, from the luxurious Sorris Sorris to the authentic Damaraland Camp and Desert Rhino Camp to the rustic and eco Etendeka Mountain Camp, all have something very unique and special.
For those that like a bit a bit of freedom and excitement there are also some campsites, perfect for a night in the wilderness before heading to a camp or lodge, we would suggest camping in the south of Damaraland and visiting the cultural sights before heading further north to the more wildlife dense areas and staying in a property with trackers and guided activities.
Another great way to explore some of Damaraland’s extremely remote areas is to leave your own car at a lodge and go into the wilderness on a supported camping trip for a few nights, this involves you, a guide and a camp assistant and allows you to get into areas that would otherwise be completely inaccessible.
Damaraland is most definitely a year round destination although the accessibility and surroundings do change through the year. The early dry season is a really nice time to see the north of the area as there is a nice amount of green on the backdrop of red soil and mountains making for great photographic opportunities.
A very central point on a Namibia driving circuit, Damaraland is almost equidistant from the Capital, Windhoek, Southern Etosha and Swakopmund making it a very useful as well as rewarding part of your itinerary.
As previously mentioned the big draw to this area is the wildlife that roams this vast arid area but it is well worth a trip to some of the other sites such as Tywfelfontein while in the vacinity.
