Duration: 11 Nights
When: Jun – Nov
Snapshot: This is one of the most incredible safari itineraries in our opinion, it covers such a vast area of Tanzania, travelling to the north, west and southern parts of the country. We would recommend this trip for those that know they love safari and are looking for a longer exploration of a destination.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arusha
On arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport you will be met and transferred to the beautiful Mwacheo, located outside Arusha, you will stay for one night on a half board basis. This property is one of our favourites for a night in Arusha when required to meet flights to Western Tanzania.
Day 2 – Serengeti National Park
This morning you will be transferred to Arusha’s domestic airport where you will fly by light aircraft to the amazing Serengeti National Park. Here you will be met by your guide and you will game drive to Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp where you will stay for the next 3 nights.
Day 3 and 4 – Serengeti National Park
These days you will explore the Serengeti. This camp is a mobile tented camp and moves with the seasons, depending on what time of year you visit will determine where in the area you are. The camp broadly follows and cuts ahead of the route of the wildebeest migration with a period of time in the central Serengeti while the migration is likely to be in Kenya.
Day 5 – Katavi National Park
Today you will take the Nomad shared charter light aircraft to Katavi. You will stay at the amazing Chada Katavi for the next 4 nights on a full board basis including house drinks. Katavi is a stunning tented camp in a true wilderness, there really are very few places like this left.
Day 6 to 8 – Katavi National Park
The game is everywhere in Katavi. So much so in fact, that you often don’t have to leave your tent veranda to see all kinds. Elephant are frequent visitors, attracted to the same shady fruit trees as us, and vast herds of buffalo graze on the flood plain, sometimes right in front of camp.
The walking here is absolutely fantastic and the game driving is pretty special too. With so few people here you get a sense of wilderness that is not available on this level anywhere else in Africa. There is a fantastic fly camping option in Katavi, if you like the sound of sleeping under a mosquito net beneath the African stars then we can add this into the itinerary on one of your nights here (available at an additional cost and must be pre-booked).
Day 9 – Ruaha National Park
Today you will fly by scheduled light aircraft with Safari Airlink from Katavi National Park to Ruaha National Park, on arrival you will be met by your driver guide who will drive you through the park to the very secluded Kigelia. You will stay here for the next 3 nights on a full board basis including house drinks.
The camp is very light and has minimal impact on the surroundings, but it is still stylishly furnished with all the comforts. The sleeping tents have large beds and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and an “open to the sky” safari style bucket shower. The larger pavilion style mess tent provides the living space for dining and relaxing, with a bar and a well-stocked library.
Day 10 and 11 – Ruaha National Park
Ruaha National Park is one of Tanzania’s lesser visited wildlife destinations but it is one of our favourites, the feeling of remoteness is more apparent here than almost anywhere else in the country (with the exception of Katavi). It is not just the wilderness that is a draw here, the wildlife is also great, you may have to work a bit harder than some places but we have some of our best sightings in Africa in this park and not only that but we had them to ourselves!
We have the most incredible memories of my last visit to Kigelia Camp and Ruaha National Park, when you have the time I will tell you the incredible story of my nighttime game viewing experience with a difference….
Day 12
Today, at the end of this epic safari through Tanzania, you will fly from Ruaha to Dar es Salaam for your onward arrangements.
