Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is Ugandas prime Gorilla conservation area, whilst only a small area this is home to nearly half of the remaining population of Mountain Gorillas. There are currently 17 groups that are habituated across the country and with permit prices under half that of neighbouring Rwanda it is currently our top primate destination.
Bwindi has some great accommodation options from simple and rustic to the luxurious but let us not forget, the reason for coming here is to get the chance to spend some time with this wonderful but endangered animal. While the number of permits have been increased for 2019 there are still limited spaces and the increase of the rate in Rwanda has meant that Uganda is becoming more popular so it is vital to book early to get the tracking permits.
Although the Gorillas are definitely the draw to this part of Uganda it is important to mention that Bwindi is host to a whole variety of mammals as well as some of Africa’s best birdlife.
We try to avoid Gorilla activities during the heaviest rain periods, while you are travelling in a rain forest and rain is expected all year round, the Gorillas do tend to retreat to the harder to reach areas during the heavy rains in March and April and trekking is hard going.
It is possible to reach Bwindi by either road from Mburo or Queen Elizabeth if on a driving safari or by air to one of three airstrips from where you will be et and transferred to your lodge.
Gorilla Tracking and Trekking is the main activity in Bwindi, of course we can never guarantee sightings but these habituated families are well monitored and well known, one session is usually enough however, if you have the time and the budget there are multiple areas in which you can trek.
