When we talk about Chimp trekking there are two places in Africa that truly stand out for us, Kibale in Uganda and Mahale in Tanzania, the latter be incredibly remote while the former is a simple short flight or a straight forward road transfer from the capital. Kibale’s primary activity is chimp trekking with most properties offering morning and afternoon excursions to do so, and with an incredible 90% record of getting good sightings a few days here is enough to have some incredible face to face (almost) time with mans closest relative in the animal kingdom.
While the Chimps are often seen as a sideline to the Gorillas while in Uganda it is hard to undersell the impact of watching these incredible animals interact and to see how close to us they are in their mannerisms and expressions, it is a truly fascinating activity.
If you have more time then from Kbale you can travel to either Rwenzori Mountains for some wonderfully scenic hiking or to Semliki for an off the beaten track game viewing destination.
We avoid rain forest activities during the heaviest rain periods, while rain is expected all year round, conditions are not conducive to fun trekking experiences if it rains for the entire duration of your visit, for this reason we do not advise travelling in March and April.
Reaching Kibale is easy from either Queen Elizabeth or Kampala/Entebbe, if on a longer safari you can also reach Kibale from Murchison Falls.
Trekking with Chimpanzees is the main activity in Kibale although there is a lot of other wildlife in the vicinity including a number of other primates as well as some larger plains game such as Elephant and Lion.
