The Seregenti National Park is possibly Africa’s best known national parks and its reputation for offering a great safari is well earned. The vast plains of the Serengeti are what normally comes to mind when first time visitors to Africa imagine what it will be like. Endless wilderness with the occasional tree, rock outcrop or small hill.
This vast ecosystem is home to the annual migration of Wildebeest, from calving in the south to river crossings in the north, read our section below for more on the migration. While the migration is a huge draw for visitors to the Serengeti there is a lot more to this incredible national park than it simply being home to this spectacular natural event, so whether you are looking to witness the wildebeest or to find a quiet, wild corner to search for predators or birds then get in touch and let us help design your itinerary.
The Serengeti can be visited all year round, although we tend to avoid April and May when the long rains can have an impact on the experience. The incredible Wildebeest migration spends much of its time in this amazing landscape and even calves in the southern area during January and February which is a great spectacle. The height of game viewing is from June to October when the land dries out and wildlife becomes more reliant on watering holes and waterways.
The Serengeti can be accessed by road on a driving itinerary or by air from a number of destinations. With a great network of light aircraft flights the Serengeti can be linked with safari destinations across the country, the beaches of Zanzibar and even Rwanda.
While game driving is very much the focus of this vast area there have been strong developments in Tanzania’s walking safari offerings since the government changed regulations to allow a variety of new activities within national parks.
The Migration
The annual journey of 1.5 million wildebeest and some 200,000 zebra following the rains and the most appetising grasslands, all the while trying to avoid falling victim to the numerous predators stalking or lying in wait. The Migration follows a general annual pattern moving with the rains through the Serengeti and into the Masaai Mara,
