The Garden Route is one of South Africa’s most visited areas, it is a beautiful stretch of coastline between Cape Town and Tsitsikamma that makes a lovely self drive trip and a great addition to a Cape Town and Winelands itinerary. With loads of places to stop and plenty of things to do it can also be extended with a safari in one of the areas great little Malaria free private reserves. An alternative to the start of the Garden Route is Route 62 runs along a more inland route and takes in some stunning scenery of its own.
A driving itinerary in South Africa is superb for the freedom and flexibility it allows, there are also numerous ways to combine the Garden Route with other parts of the country. While Hermanus is not technically part of the Garden Route it is very frequently include in the same itinerary, especially during the Whale watching season which is June to November, with September being the highlight when Southern Right Whales come even closer to shore during their mating season. There are some really great properties in the area from small and stylish boutique hotels and guesthouses to the luxurious Grootbos private nature reserve.
Based around a large lagoon Knysna and its surrounds are incredibly picturesque. The area between Knysna and Plettenberg bay is home to some seriously striking scenery and some great walks and a number of nature reserves to explore, there are also a number of wildlife sanctuaries that are definitely of interest to those with kids, with the elephant park being a favourite with youngsters.
The best beach along the Garden Route this is a lovely stop for a few days, especially in summer, there are lots of local attractions to explore and the nearby Garden Route National Park as well as the great beach. If you have been on the go for some time this is a great place to either pause or finish your trip with a few nights in one place.
The Garden Route has a similar climate to Cape Town making it perfect to visit in summer and therefore a great escape from northern hemisphere winter. This area is very busy during the christmas period due to local tourism so it is best to book early if you want to visit during this time, otherwise January to March are fantastic times to explore.
It is possible to visit parts of the Garden Route using public transport or group tours but by far the best and most recommended way to get around is with a rental car. One way hire is easy and cheap and allows flying on to a safari destination or back to Cape Town, alternatively ask about our really great little driving loop itinerary.
There is so much to do along the garden route, from walking and exploring nature reserves to kayaking, fishing or golf…for the really adventurous there is even bungee jumping! Safaris are also easily added on to a Garden Route itinerary in a number of great private reserves.
