Mdonya Old River Camp is a pretty rustic affair, it is a simply put together tented bush camp. The focus here is squarely on the game driving and the wildlife, with none of the extra touches at some of the other camps in the Ruaha, this, however, is so that the guests are truly immersed in the surrounding wilderness.
Mdonya offers the best value option that we recommend in Ruaha, but it is definitely a camp for the more adventurous, looking for something a bit more wild and rugged. The main area is a simple mess tent and a separate lounge tent along with a camp fire and outside seating for the evenings.
It fits in well with Selous Impala or Lake Manze camps in the Selous Game reserve and makes a really nice 7-9 night safari combination which can then be extended with a visit to Zanzibar for those that fancy some beach time after the bush.
The only thing that we find a little disappointing with Old Mdonya River Camp is that there is currently no option to do walking safaris in this incredibly wild area. The primary activity here is day time drives, we do hope that they will be able to offer walking safaris in the future as this would be a great addition to an otherwise solid option.
